In observance of Juneteenth, all Walker County Government offices — including the landfill — will be closed this Thursday, June 19th. Normal operations in Walker County will resume on Friday, June 20th.
Georgia State Senator Colton Moore is facing a financial penalty following an ethics investigation by the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Moore, who represents Northwest Georgia — including Walker County — has agreed to pay a $500 fine after failing to submit required personal financial disclosures for 2022 and 2023. He also missed a campaign finance report due this past January. The violations were uncovered as part of a broader audit reviewing financial reporting by state lawmakers. Moore signed a consent order last week, acknowledging the infractions. No additional disciplinary action is expected at this time. However, the Commission says it will continue monitoring compliance from all elected officials statewide.
Yesterday’s primary election for Public Service Commission seats. In the District 2 Republican Primary incumbent Tim Echols defeated Lee Muns with more than 76% of the vote. Echols will now face Democrat Alicia M. Johnson in November’s General Election. Johnson ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket. In District 3, Republican Fritz Johnson was unopposed while Keisha Sean Waites won with more than 46% of the vote.
Firefighters responded Monday night to a residential fire in the 900 block of Probasco Street in LaFayette. Crews from the LaFayette Fire Department, along with support from Walker County Fire Rescue worked together to contain the fire. Thankfully, all residents were able to escape safely. The LaFayette Fire Department says no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents. At this time, the cause of the fire has not been released. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Four felony arrests on Monday. 39-year-old Jonathan Phil Rich was charged with loitering and prowling along with possession of meth. 36-year-old Christopher Duane Boyd faces one felony count of theft, one misdemeanor theft charge and was also charged with battery. A 15-year-old juvenile was booked on a charge of unruly juvenile along with assault and battery charges. 22-year-old Michael RayLewis Eustice is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
