The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Walker County, in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters warn that heat index values could climb as high as 107 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone exposed to prolonged heat or engaging in strenuous outdoor activity.
The advisory also covers much of north and central Georgia, with hot temperatures and high humidity expected to impact the region throughout the two-day period.
Health officials caution that the high heat could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals without access to air conditioning.
Adding to the concern, Tuesday night temperatures will remain elevated, offering little overnight relief before heat index values rise again on Wednesday.
Residents are urged to take precautions:
Drink plenty of water
Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours
Stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible
Check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members
Ensure pets have shade and access to fresh water
Local emergency services are advising residents to adjust outdoor plans, including camps, practices, and other events, to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
