Tuesday, July 22, 2025 — Local law enforcement is warning residents to be on alert after a concerning phone scam surfaced this week. A citizen reported receiving a call that appeared to come from the police department’s official phone number. The caller falsely identified themselves as Assistant Chief Jason Steadman, claiming they had obtained information from Homeland Security related to the individual.

Authorities stress that this call is a scam, and no such contact or investigation is taking place.

“The use of a legitimate officer’s name and the department’s phone number makes this especially deceptive,” a department spokesperson said. “We want the public to know that law enforcement will never call and ask for personal information in this manner.”

Citizens are urged to not provide any personal or financial information if they receive a similar call. Instead, hang up immediately and report the incident to the police department.

Officials remind everyone that caller ID can be spoofed, and scammers frequently use the names of real officers or agencies to appear credible.

If you believe you have been targeted or have any information about this scam, please contact the police department directly.
