In an effort to keep school-related property taxes from rising, the Walker County Board of Education plans to adopt the full rollback millage rate of 14.418 mills for the upcoming fiscal year. The move comes as property values across the county continue to increase. Under Georgia law, if local taxing authorities don’t adjust millage rates when property values rise, it’s still treated as a tax increase—even if the rate itself doesn’t change. By implementing the rollback, the school board ensures that tax revenue from existing properties remains on par with last year. District officials say the move is part of an ongoing effort to manage public funds responsibly and reduce the financial strain on taxpayers. This proposed rollback continues a five-year trend of rate reductions. Back in 2020, the millage rate stood at 17.404 mills. The new rate of 14.418 for 2025 reflects the district’s broader goal of lowering local taxes while still maximizing available state funding. Despite tight financial conditions, the Board says it remains focused on providing quality education and preparing students for success beyond high school. Residents will have the chance to share their thoughts during a public hearing set for Monday, September 15th at 6 p.m. That meeting will take place at the Walker County Department of Education boardroom in LaFayette.
