       The Walker County Board of Commissioners will hold its regular meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at the Commissioners Office in LaFayette.  The agenda includes financial and departmental reports, a proclamation for Constitution Week, and several public hearings on zoning requests.  Among them, April Lynn Morgan is seeking to rezone multiple parcels on Joe Robertson Road in Rocky Face from agricultural to residential. Another request would allow a smaller home to be built on Huffman Road.  The board will also vote on several resolutions, including one to amend the 2025 budget for the Sheriff’s Office, another to set this year’s property tax millage rate, and a resolution to place a SPLOST referendum on the November ballot.  Consent agenda items include SPLOST-funded purchases for 911 upgrades and library digitization projects.  The next meeting is set for October 2nd at 201 South Duke Street.
        A Gordon County man is facing multiple charges after a deadly high-speed crash killed one person and seriously injured two others from a Dade County family.  Authorities say 35-year-old Matthew Allen Pickens fled from deputies on August 23rd, reaching speeds over 100 miles an hour before driving into oncoming traffic near Calhoun and crashing head-on into a Honda CRV.  Brandon Franks was killed. His wife and young son remain hospitalized.  Pickens, who was also injured, is now in the Gordon County Jail. He’s charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, and reckless driving, among others.  This is his fourth arrest for traffic-related offenses since 2020.
      Fifteen people died on Georgia roads over the 2025 Labor Day weekend, according to Georgia State Patrol.  The holiday travel period ran from Friday evening through late Monday night. Troopers made over 19,000 traffic stops, issued more than 9,800 citations, and arrested 425 drivers for DUI.  Officials say holiday weekends continue to see spikes in crash fatalities nationwide.
       High School football is back in action tomorrow night, except for the LaFayette Ramblers.  The Rambler take this Friday night off.  They return to the field next Friday with a road trip to Trion.  Tomorrow nights schedule in north Georgia includes Ridgeland hosting Coosa, Ringgold is at Rockmart, Trion visits Model, LFO is at home against North Murray, Heritage hosts Gordon Lee, Chattooga faces Mt Zion Carroll on the road and Calhoun is at Cartersville.
