As cooler temperatures settle in and residents begin seasonal yard cleanup, officials are reminding the public of outdoor burning guidelines in place for the fall and winter months.
From now through April 30, residents living in unincorporated areas of Walker County do not need a permit to burn natural debris such as twigs, small tree limbs, leaves, brush, and grass clippings. This open burning period provides an opportunity to safely dispose of yard waste accumulated during the growing season.
However, officials caution that burning household garbage or man-made materials remains strictly prohibited year-round. Items such as tires, shingles, plastics, and treated lumber pose serious health and environmental risks when burned and are illegal to incinerate in any setting.
For those residing within the city limits of LaFayette, Rossville, Chickamauga, and Lookout Mountain, burn permits are still required and must be obtained through the respective city government.
Residents are encouraged to always monitor burning activity closely, ensure fires are fully extinguished, and follow all local safety recommendations to prevent wildfires and protect air quality.
