City and County offices throughout Walker County will be closed today in observance of Veterans Day. In LaFayette, today’s garbage route will be collected tomorrow, along with the regular Wednesday route. The Walker County Landfill is open today.
Walker County authorities are asking for help locating 16-year-old Leah Elizabeth Jenkins, reported missing late Sunday night. She was last seen around 11:45 p.m. on November 9, leaving her home on Raleigh Drive in LaFayette. Jenkins was wearing a pink hoodie and white shorts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Eddie Hill at 706-670-1962 or email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the sheriff’s office website. Authorities continue working to ensure the teen’s safe return.
A Walker County family is recovering after a Sunday morning house fire that claimed the life of LaFayette High School special education teacher John Millican the Third. His wife, Heather, a teacher at LaFayette Middle School, and their two children survived but were seriously injured, including a 3-year-old with severe burns. Authorities say the fire began in the living room and spread quickly. No foul play is suspected, but the cause remains under investigation. Counselors were available yesterday in Walker County Schools to support students and staff. A GoFundMe has been organized to assist the family, and fire officials note the home did have working smoke detectors. Residents can contact the Walker County Fire Department for free smoke detector installation.
A crash Monday morning in Fort Oglethorpe involved a dump truck and a Walker County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. The wreck happened during rush hour on Battlefield Parkway near Fant Drive and City Hall Drive. The crash remains under investigation. An ambulance responded to the scene, but authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured.
The Walker County Board of Education will hold its regular session Monday, November 17th at 6 p.m. at the Board of Education building on North Cherokee Street in LaFayette. The agenda includes the superintendent’s report, a facilities update, and the September financial report. The board will also consider the tentative 2026 meeting schedule and several consent items, including a new roof for the Headstart facility, the purchase of a school bus, agreements for student mental and behavioral health services, and school activity contracts. The meeting is open to the public.
Today is the 2nd Annual Rambler Rumble on the Square in downtown LaFayette. The outdoor wrestling event begins at 4:30 this afternoon on the square. The Lady Ramblers will take on Carrollton High School, followed by the Ramblers facing Murray County. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets, gloves, coats, and chairs.
