The Heritage High School community is grieving following the death of a student on Friday, November 14, 2025, according to Catoosa County Schools.

Superintendent Chance Nix said school and district staff acted swiftly Friday morning to ensure students felt safe and supported as the news emerged. “We witnessed true professionalism and heartfelt compassion in action,” Nix said in a statement. “Everyone surrounded students with support by deploying school counselors, social workers, district staff, and outside mental health professionals. They ensured that our SROs and school nurses were present to maintain a calm and secure environment.”

Nix expressed gratitude not only for staff but for community partners who stepped in quickly. “We are also deeply grateful for our community partners, including local youth pastors and counselors, who stepped forward immediately to offer additional care and support.”

He added that the district’s thoughts remain with the student’s family, friends, and all who loved him. “We will continue to wrap our arms around our school community with the care it needs in the days ahead.”

To support students, families, and staff, Heritage High School and Principal Scott Phillips implemented a series of measures Friday:

  • Students, teammates, and their families were invited to gather in the school media center, where multiple counselors, social workers, and administrators were available.

  • Additional quiet spaces were set aside for any student needing individual support.

  • Students seeking one-on-one attention were directed to the counseling office.

  • Faculty and staff were briefed in writing and in person on how to respond to student needs, and were given guidance on recognizing and assisting struggling students.

  • District-level personnel were on campus to assist staff and students.

  • Teachers were instructed to be especially visible during class changes to check on students.

  • Students who were struggling were permitted to check out of school, with absences excused under normal procedures.

  • Teachers were encouraged to place academics “on the back burner” for the day in order to focus on student care.

In a separate statement, Catoosa County Public Schools described the student as “an exceptional student and athlete,” adding that he “will be deeply missed by his classmates, teachers, and our entire school community.”

No further details about the student have been released.
