A proposed development in Walker County is raising concerns among residents in the Naomi community.
The proposal centers on property at the intersection of Highways 136 and 151, where the owners are seeking to sell the land to a developer who plans to build a gas station. The location sits near Naomi Baptist Church and Naomi Elementary School, prompting opposition from both institutions.
Representatives from the church and the school told WDEF-TV in Chattanooga that they are concerned about increased traffic at the busy intersection and potential safety issues, particularly related to the sale of alcohol so close to a school campus.
Supporters of the project argue that similar situations already exist elsewhere in the county. The daughter of the property owner said other schools in Walker County are located near existing gas stations and convenience stores.
Proponents also say state regulations would govern the sale of alcohol and limit potential problems. They added that the developer has proposed a wide buffer between the gas station and Naomi Elementary School in an effort to address safety and visibility concerns.
The matter was deferred for up to 60 days and is expected to return for consideration at either the March or April meeting of the Walker County Commission.
The Walker County Planning Commission has already reviewed the proposal and recommended that it be denied.
