Walker County Improves Recycling Access with New Container

SHARE NOW

Walker County residents who use the landfill’s recycling center will notice a new addition aimed at making drop-offs easier and more efficient.

County officials recently introduced a recycling container featuring sliding side doors, a change prompted by feedback from residents and supported by Chairwoman Angie Teems. The previous container’s height made unloading difficult for some users. The new design allows recyclables to be placed inside at a more accessible level.

The original, taller container remains on site and will continue to be used, particularly for larger or bulkier items.

Landfill officials say the updated container may also help cut costs. By limiting exposure to rain and excess moisture, the design helps keep recyclable materials lighter. Since recycling fees are based on weight and charged per ton, reducing moisture can lower expenses for the county.

Residents are reminded to follow proper recycling guidelines to prevent contamination. Accepted materials include plastics labeled one through seven, rinsed food and beverage cans, paper products, cardboard and newspapers. Cans should not be crushed before being placed in the bin.

Officials stress that food waste or items contaminated with food can spoil an entire load. While residents are not charged to recycle, the county pays its recycling partner, Smurfit Westrock, through the landfill budget. If a load is contaminated, those materials may be rejected, resulting in added costs.

Due to strong participation in the program, landfill staff recommend calling ahead to confirm space is available before making a trip. The landfill can be reached at 706-375-8910. Additional recycling information is available on the county’s website.
