Based on the current conditions on many back roads and the potential for black ice with falling temperatures overnight, Walker County Schools have decided to operate on a 2-hour delay this Tuesday morning March 17th. Again Walker County Schools operating on a 2- hour delay this morning.

A minor accident involving a Walker County school bus and another vehicle happened Monday afternoon in Rossville. Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson says the crash occurred at the intersection of Georgia Highway 2 and Happy Valley Road. No injuries were reported. Authorities say the Georgia State Patrol is now investigating the cause of the accident. More information is expected as the investigation continues.

Parents and students connected to the LaFayette High School cheerleading program say they are devastated following the departure of longtime head coach Nicole Harris. Supporters say Harris spent more than two decades building the program and mentoring student-athletes.

Harris served as head coach for 24 years, and many parents and students say she played a major role in growing the team and supporting athletes both on and off the mat.

Walker County Schools Superintendent Damon Raines says Harris resigned from the position. However, several parents say they were told the decision to leave was not voluntary.

Parents plan to attend an upcoming Walker County Board of Education meeting to voice concerns.

Gas prices are on the rise across the state as Spring Break travel gets underway. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is now three dollars and fifty-one cents, up twenty-nine cents from last week. AAA says increased travel demand and crude oil prices climbing past one hundred dollars a barrel are driving the increase. Filling up a typical fifteen-gallon tank now costs drivers about fifty-two dollars and sixty-five cents. AAA says coordinated releases from U.S. and international oil reserves could help slow further price increases.

 

Walker County election officials are reminding voters about early voting for the upcoming Special Runoff Election on April 7th. The Walker County Board of Elections and Registration says early voting will take place March 30th through April 2nd from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Voting will be held only at the Walker County Elections Office on South Main Street in LaFayette.
