The Walker County Landfill’s “Strawapalooza” giveaway event proved to be a major success this week, with nearly 300 bales of straw distributed to residents in a single day.
Organizers reported that 293 square bales of straw were handed out during the event, exceeding initial expectations and exhausting the available supply earlier than planned. As a result, the giveaway was cut short after supplies ran out.
County officials thanked residents for their strong participation and for helping put the leftover material to good use rather than allowing it to go to waste.
The Strawapalooza event was originally scheduled for March 24–25 and was designed to distribute approximately 250 square bales of straw left over from a recent slope stabilization project at the Walker County Landfill. The material needed to be removed due to limited storage space and the risk of deterioration if kept long-term.
Residents were invited to pick up the straw at no cost, with a limit of five bales per vehicle per day. Straw can be used for a variety of spring projects, including covering newly seeded grass, mulching gardens, composting, and providing bedding for animals.
