Middle East Conflict Pushes Oil Prices Higher, Georgia Gas Tax Suspension Offers Some Relief

Ongoing conflict in the Middle East is putting upward pressure on global oil prices, leading to continued volatility at the gas pump, though Georgia drivers are still seeing some relief due to the state’s suspension of the gas tax.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Georgia now stands at $3.58, down 11 cents from last week but still 8 cents higher than a month ago and 64 cents higher than this time last year. Filling a standard 15-gallon tank currently costs drivers about $53.70.

“Drivers are seeing higher prices at the pump due to rising crude oil costs,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Governor Kemp’s suspension of the state gas tax is helping provide relief, but with elevated oil prices, increasing seasonal demand, and the switch to summer gasoline, prices are likely to remain under pressure in the near term.”

AAA reports that global tensions, including conflict involving Iran, continue to impact crude oil markets, contributing to higher fuel costs. At the same time, increased spring break travel and the transition to summer-blend gasoline are adding to demand, keeping prices elevated.

Nationally, the average price for regular gasoline has climbed 4 cents over the past week and is now about a dollar higher than it was a month ago, rising from $2.98 in late February to $3.98 today. Analysts warn the national average could soon reach $4 per gallon for the first time since March 2022 if current trends continue.

Electric vehicle drivers are seeing stable costs, with the national average price for electricity at public EV charging stations holding steady at 41 cents per kilowatt hour. AAA encourages travelers to plan ahead by checking fuel and charging prices along their route using the TripTik Travel Planner.

Within Georgia, the most expensive metro markets for gasoline are Atlanta at $3.65 per gallon, Athens at $3.63, and Gainesville at $3.62. The least expensive markets are Hinesville-Fort Stewart at $3.45, Brunswick at $3.44, and Albany at $3.41.

Drivers are encouraged to monitor fuel prices closely and expect continued fluctuations in the weeks ahead as global oil markets respond to ongoing geopolitical developments and seasonal demand.
