ROCK SPRING, Ga. — A new chapter is underway in Walker County as Sharon Evans has been appointed Tax Commissioner following the retirement of longtime officeholder Carolyn Walker.
Walker stepped down last week after more than 25 years of dedicated service to the county, citing a desire to focus on her health. Her tenure leaves behind a legacy of commitment and steady leadership within one of the county’s most essential offices.
Evans brings nearly 16 years of experience within the Tax Commissioner’s office to her new role, including serving as Chief Deputy Tax Commissioner since 2019. Sworn in on March 25, Evans emphasized her commitment to ensuring continuity and stability.
“My goal is to keep the county functioning without any interruptions and for there to be a smooth transition,” Evans said. “I’m ready to hit the ground running.”
A graduate of LaFayette High School, Evans has worked closely alongside Walker for years and says that experience has prepared her to lead. She noted the office’s team of 16 employees remains focused on delivering efficient and compliant service to residents.
The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s office plays a vital role in the community, handling tax collections on property including land, homes, and mobile homes, as well as managing motor vehicle services and homestead exemption applications. Services are available at office locations in Rock Spring and Rossville.
Looking ahead, voters will have the opportunity to decide who will complete the remainder of Walker’s term. A special election is scheduled for November 10th, with qualifying set to open August 17 and close at noon on August 19. The qualifying fee will be determined by the Walker County Board of Commissioners at its May 7 meeting.
As Evans steps into the role, county leaders and residents alike will be watching a transition that aims to build on decades of service while maintaining the high standards set by her predecessor.
