Some Georgia residents could soon see extra money in their bank accounts as the state begins distributing surplus tax refunds.

The Georgia Department of Revenue announced that the payments are now being processed and will be issued in phases over the coming weeks. Officials say most eligible taxpayers can expect to receive their refunds within six to eight weeks.

The refunds are based on previously filed state income tax returns and are part of the state’s effort to return excess revenue to taxpayers.

To qualify, individuals must have been full-time Georgia residents for the past two years and must have filed a timely state income tax return. Those who did not live in Georgia for the entire period may still be eligible for partial payments.

According to state officials, refund amounts will typically range from $250 to $500, depending on a taxpayer’s filing status.
