A long-envisioned project honoring the contributions of African Americans in Walker County is now officially underway.

The Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association (WCAAHAA) recently marked a major milestone with the groundbreaking of the African American Memorial Park, located at the corner of Villanow Street and Oak Street. The project has been years in the making, with community members steadily raising funds “brick by brick” to bring the vision to life.

The effort is led by Beverly Foster, who has worked to create a space dedicated to recognizing and preserving the history and impact of African Americans throughout the county. Organizers say the project has been a true labor of love, supported by residents from across the community.

Construction of the first phase is expected to continue through 2026, with additional phases planned as fundraising efforts progress.

Community support remains a key part of the project’s future. Donations are still needed to complete the park, and the public can contribute by purchasing memorial bricks for $100 or 12-by-12-inch black granite pavers for $500.

Those interested in supporting the effort can contact Beverly Foster at (706) 670-1165 or visit the organization’s website for more information.
