The Walker County Animal Shelter is preparing to take part in a nationwide adoption effort aimed at finding homes for thousands of cats and dogs.

Shelter officials announced they will participate in the Empty the Shelters Spring National Adoption Event, organized by the BISSELL Pet Foundation. The event runs May 1 through May 17 and marks the program’s 10th anniversary.

“We are excited to announce that we are participating… It is an honor to be selected to participate in this nationwide event to find homes for cats and dogs across the country,” the shelter said in a statement.

Founded in 2016 by Cathy Bissell, the Empty the Shelters initiative has supported nearly 400,000 pet adoptions nationwide. This year’s spring campaign includes more than 335 participating organizations across 39 states.

During the event, adoption fees will be reduced, allowing approved adopters to take home a spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped pet for $70 or less.

Organizers say the initiative comes at a critical time, as many shelters across the country continue to face overcrowding and increased demand for services.
