Cadets from LaFayette High School JROTC recently joined fellow students from across northwest Georgia for a joint leadership and career exploration visit to Fort Benning, giving students firsthand exposure to military leadership, training and career opportunities.

The collaborative trip also included cadets from Gordon County Schools JROTC and Ridgeland High School JROTC. The visit allowed cadets from multiple programs to work together while observing Army operations and interacting directly with active-duty soldiers.

During the visit, cadets watched a rappel demonstration at the Air Assault School and learned about harness systems at the Airborne School. Students also met with Army Drill Instructors to discuss the physical demands and expectations of Basic Combat Training, gaining insight into the discipline and preparation required for military service.

Cadets additionally participated in leadership discussions focused on accountability, decision-making and goal setting while observing real-world applications of teamwork and leadership skills taught through JROTC programs.

“Experiences like this give cadets a clearer understanding of what it means to serve and lead,” said Mike Mansi, Senior Army Instructor at LaFayette High School. “They leave with a stronger sense of purpose and a better appreciation for the discipline required to succeed.”

The trip concluded with a tour of the National Infantry Museum, where students explored the history and legacy of the United States Army Infantry.

“This joint visit allowed our cadets to not only learn from the Army, but also from each other,” said Wallace Steinbrecher, Senior Army Instructor for Gordon County JROTC. “By bringing multiple programs together, we strengthened teamwork, shared perspectives, and reinforced the leadership principles we teach every day.”

Organizers said the experience gave cadets a broader understanding of both military and civilian career paths while helping students build confidence in their leadership abilities.

The visit reflects the continued commitment of North Georgia JROTC programs to developing leadership skills, character and responsible citizenship through hands-on learning opportunities outside the classroom.
