A storage unit fire in LaFayette has dealt a significant setback to a local nonprofit working to provide beds for children in need.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace of LaFayette reported that nearly 100 bed frames and mattresses were destroyed in the fire. Many of the items had been donated just weeks earlier during a 24-hour build event organized with support from Lowe’s.

The organization said the fire left behind charred bed frames and unusable mattresses, wiping out a large portion of its recent inventory.

In a statement shared on social media, Sleep in Heavenly Peace said, “Our hearts are very heavy right now. Our unit was one of many that was damaged by the fire. We are requesting prayers for everyone who lost their belongings in this fire… but we will come back stronger together. We will get kids off the floor in our town.”

Despite the loss, the group says it remains committed to its mission of ensuring every child in the community has a safe place to sleep.
