The LaFayette Woman’s Club celebrated the dedication and accomplishments of its members during the organization’s annual Awards Luncheon held Tuesday, May 12, recognizing outstanding service to the club and community at both the local and state levels.
One of the afternoon’s top honors, the prestigious Club Appreciation Award, was presented to Julie Merendino. The award is selected by members of the LaFayette Woman’s Club and recognizes a member’s commitment and dedication to the organization.
LaFayette Woman’s Club First Vice President and past award recipient Stephanie Wardlaw presented the honor, praising Merendino’s involvement and enthusiasm within the club.
“She has become a consistent and enthusiastic presence within our Club,” Wardlaw said. “She has made a clear and intentional commitment to become deeply involved in the work, relationships, and mission of this organization.”
Merendino said she was honored by the recognition.
“I am honored that my efforts have made an impact and been recognized by such an amazing group of women,” she said. “I am grateful to be part of this wonderful organization.”
The luncheon also included special recognition for former District President and longest-serving club member Irma Mendoza Shaw. Shaw was honored for her years of service to the club, district, and state organization with a commemorative silver tray bearing her name. The tray will be presented as a membership award at the state convention over the next 10 years.
LaFayette Woman’s Club President Rachel Willeford praised Shaw’s leadership and long-standing dedication to the organization.
“Irma has served and continues to serve our organization faithfully,” Willeford said. “Her leadership, knowledge, and years of service benefit every aspect of GFWC Georgia. Our Club members are honored to serve alongside such an inspirational woman.”
Shaw said the recognition was especially meaningful to her.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition,” Shaw said. “I want to thank my Club for their support and for the opportunity to be a part of this great organization and to be able to serve not only our Club, District, and State but most importantly, our community which I love.”
In addition to the individual honors, both the LaFayette Woman’s Club and the LaFayette Juniorette Club earned multiple district and state awards for community service efforts during 2026.
At the state level, the LaFayette Juniorette Club received certificates in all service areas along with a $25 award to continue community service projects. The LaFayette Woman’s Club also earned the district silver award for Best Overall Fundraising.
Several members were additionally recognized for artistic achievements. Club member Sarah Willeford earned first place at both the district and state levels in Member Art for Knitting, while Juniorette member Leah Willeford received first place honors in Member Art for Sewing.
Club leaders said the awards reflect the organizations’ continued commitment to service, leadership, and strengthening the local community through volunteerism and outreach.
