As Memorial Day weekend travel ramps up across Georgia and the Southeast, AAA is once again activating its “Tow to Go” program to help keep impaired drivers off the road.

The Auto Club Group announced the program will be available beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22 through 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 26. Georgians who need a safe ride home can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.

The service provides a free and confidential ride for both the driver and their vehicle to a safe location within 10 miles. Tow to Go is available to both AAA members and non-members.

“We don’t want impaired people getting behind the wheel and risking the lives of everyone on the road,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “AAA encourages anyone planning to drink or take impairing substances to also plan for a safe ride. Tow to Go can be your backup plan.”

The program is designed as a last-resort safety option for drivers who did not make transportation arrangements before consuming alcohol or other impairing substances. AAA emphasized that appointments cannot be scheduled ahead of time and encouraged motorists to designate a sober driver before celebrations begin.

Tow to Go will be available in Georgia and several other participating states, including Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and select metro areas in Colorado and Indiana.

AAA officials also noted the service may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions.

According to AAA, the organization expects to assist more than 350,000 drivers nationwide with roadside issues during the Memorial Day holiday travel period.

Since launching the program in 1998, Tow to Go has helped provide safe rides to nearly 30,000 people.

More information about the program is available through AAA Tow to Go.
