The Walker County Animal Shelter is celebrating the success of its Empty The Shelters adoption after dozens of animals found new homes during the nationwide campaign.
Shelter officials announced that 41 animals were adopted during the event, including 23 dogs and 18 cats. The adoption drive began May 1 and was supported through sponsorship from the BISSELL Pet Foundation and founder Cathy Bissell.
Although the shelter is far from empty, officials said the campaign still resulted in fewer animals in their care than when the event started earlier this month.
Shelter staff credited the success of the event to adopters, volunteers, animal control officers and shelter employees who worked throughout the campaign to place animals into permanent homes.
Officials also expressed appreciation to the BISSELL Pet Foundation for its continued support of animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country.
The Empty The Shelters campaign is a nationwide adoption initiative designed to help reduce overcrowding in shelters while encouraging pet adoption through reduced-cost adoption events and sponsorship opportunities.
