The Fort Oglethorpe Police Department says two masked individuals who sparked concern at a local business were identified as teenagers who believed they were participating in a prank.
According to police, officers received a report Tuesday evening of two masked individuals at Sun Tan City. The incident prompted concern and was reported to law enforcement.
Police investigated the matter Wednesday morning and utilized FLOCK camera technology to identify the vehicle involved and its occupants. Authorities determined the individuals were teenagers who reportedly thought they were playing a practical joke.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
However, the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department emphasized that actions involving concealed identities in public places can create significant fear and concern within the community.
In a statement, the department noted that in today’s environment, individuals intentionally hiding their identity may be perceived as a threat, leading to emergency calls and law enforcement responses. Officials warned that situations intended as pranks can quickly escalate and place citizens, officers, and those involved at unnecessary risk.
Police also reminded the public that Georgia law prohibits wearing a mask in public for the purpose of concealing one’s identity in certain circumstances under O.C.G.A. § 16-11-38.
The department encouraged parents to discuss the potential legal and safety consequences of such actions with their children and thanked residents for remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement.
No charges have been announced at this time.
