Motorists who regularly travel Oak Hill Road west of Lyerly will soon need to seek alternate routes as county officials prepare to close a bridge crossing Mosteller Creek following concerns raised during a recent state inspection.
County leaders were notified earlier this month that the structure had deteriorated to a point where continued public use was no longer considered safe. As a result, access across the bridge will be suspended beginning June 16.
The crossing serves as a key connector for residents traveling between portions of Chattooga County and neighboring Alabama communities. The closure is also expected to affect agricultural operations and commuters who rely on the route daily. In addition, the bridge is situated near Lyerly Elementary School, making the change particularly noticeable during school-related traffic periods.
County officials said the decision to close the bridge was made out of an abundance of caution after receiving recommendations from transportation authorities.
With the closure in place, drivers should expect detours and longer travel times while engineers evaluate the condition of the structure and determine whether rehabilitation or full replacement is the most practical option.
No estimate has been released regarding how long the bridge will remain out of service. County and state transportation officials are continuing their review and are expected to provide additional details as planning progresses.
Local officials said they are working closely with transportation engineers and state agencies to identify a path forward and minimize disruption to residents. Updates regarding the project will be shared as new information becomes available.
Drivers are encouraged to watch for traffic control signs and follow designated detour routes once the closure takes effect.
