A planned special session of the Georgia General Assembly on redistricting will not move forward after Republican leaders decided against taking up the issue. The session was requested by Governor Brian Kemp to reconsider Georgia’s congressional and legislative maps following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on redistricting. House Speaker Jon Burns said lawmakers need more time to review the ruling’s impact, along with ongoing legal challenges involving Georgia’s current districts. Burns said lawmakers should focus on economic issues instead of what he called a political fight over district lines. Republican leaders have not ruled out revisiting redistricting later this year as the debate continues nationwide.
