Government offices will be closed today. The closures are in observance of Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The Walker County landfill will be open.
The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing woman last seen in the Rising Fawn area. Investigators say 39-year-old Cindel Reed was last seen on Wednesday, June 10th. Reed is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. Anyone with information on Reed’s whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Michael Durham with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office at 706-670-1970 or email [email protected]. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Sheriff’s Office website.
Rock City Enterprises has released a 197-page traffic study on its proposed gondola system connecting a new visitor parking area in Walker County to the top of Lookout Mountain. The study finds traffic on Ochs Highway could decrease by nearly 2,800 trips on peak days, while St. Elmo Avenue and Battlefield Parkway could see increases. The report examines traffic impacts through 2033. Rock City says additional project information will be released online, and public open houses are planned to gather community feedback.
Georgia’s labor market reached new milestones in May, with the state surpassing 5 million jobs for the first time. The Georgia Department of Labor reports the state now has more than 5 million jobs, a record labor force of nearly 5.5 million people, and record employment of more than 5.2 million. Georgia’s unemployment rate fell to 3.4 percent in May, below the national rate. Job gains were led by hospitality, administrative services, transportation, and government sectors.
A recount of ballots cast in the May 19th General Republican Primary Election for Public Service Commission District 3 will take place next week in Walker County. The recount is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23rd, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Walker County Elections Office. Election officials say the recount will be open to the public, and all interested members of the community are welcome to attend and observe the process.
