Walker County Animal Shelter Still at Critical Capacity Despite 25 Adoptions

The Walker County Animal Shelter is celebrating a successful week of pet adoptions, but shelter officials say the facility remains at a critically urgent capacity as new animals continue to arrive.

The shelter announced that 25 animals found permanent homes last week, including seven adoptions made in a single day through the support of the BISSELL Pet Foundation and its founder, Cathy Bissell.

Among the pets adopted were Dolly, a 15-year-old senior dog, several long-term resident cats, and a puppy that shelter staff say is already thriving in its new home.

Despite the positive news, officials say the shelter took in 38 new animals during the same period, leaving the facility overcrowded even after the recent adoptions.

To help reduce the population, the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s adoption sponsorship remains in effect this week. Adoption fees have been waived for all adult dogs and cats, while puppies and kittens can be adopted for $25.

Shelter officials say every adoption opens space for another homeless animal and helps reduce the possibility of difficult decisions caused by overcrowding. They encourage anyone considering adding a pet to their family to visit the Walker County Animal Shelter and meet the animals currently available for adoption.
