Residents may notice increased law enforcement activity at LaFayette Middle School today. The City of LaFayette Police Department will conduct active shooter training today and again next Tuesday, July 21, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Police say the exercises will include officers, patrol cars and emergency vehicles, but stress there is no threat to the public or the school. Residents are asked to avoid the area if possible while the training is underway.
Walker County Animal Shelter is celebrating 25 pet adoptions this week, thanks in part to the BISSELL Pet Foundation. But despite the success, the shelter took in 38 new animals during the same period and remains at critical capacity. Adoption fees are still waived for adult dogs and cats, with puppies and kittens just 25 dollars. Officials say every adoption helps create space for another animal in need.
As summer travel picks up, drivers across Georgia and Tennessee can expect increased traffic enforcement. Georgia and Tennessee have joined Alabama, South Carolina and Florida for the annual Operation Southern Slow Down campaign. State troopers and local officers will step up patrols targeting speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors. Officials say the goal is to reduce deadly crashes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Motorists are urged to slow down, avoid distractions and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely. Operation Southern Slow Down continues through Sunday.
If you’re mailing a letter this week, it’ll cost you a little more. The U.S. Postal Service raised the price of a First-Class Forever stamp on Sunday from 78 cents to 82 cents. Postcard and international mail rates also increased. Postal officials say the higher prices are needed to address ongoing financial challenges, including rising operating costs and declining mail volume. Forever stamps purchased before the increase remain valid and do not require additional postage.
