No vote was taken Thursday on Walker County’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The budget was removed from the Walker County Board of Commissioners’ meeting agenda before commissioners could consider its adoption. The delay comes as a group of county residents continues raising concerns about the spending plan. The group claims the proposed budget includes a two-million-dollar shortfall and says county leaders should consider additional revenue options that would not require raising local taxes.
Walker County voters will decide this November whether to expand school property tax exemptions for senior homeowners. A special election is set for November 3rd on a proposal that would provide a 50-thousand-dollar school tax exemption for homeowners age 70 and older, and a full school tax exemption for those 75 and older. The voter registration deadline is October 5th, with early voting beginning October 13th at the Walker County Elections Office in LaFayette.
The Walker County Assessor’s Office in Rock Spring will temporarily close to the public beginning today as the building undergoes repairs. The office is expected to remain closed through September fourth, though staff will continue working from various locations across the county. The Walker County Board of Education plans to adopt its 2026 rollback millage rate during a meeting on Monday, August 17. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the Walker County Department of Education in LaFayette before the vote. The proposed rate is 14-point-013 mills, reflecting the full rollback rate based on changes in assessed property values. School leaders say the district has lowered or maintained its millage rate for the past six years, dropping from 17-point-404 mills in 2019 while continuing to fund student needs.
