Dangerous late-summer heat will push temperatures toward record levels today and tomorrow. The high today is forecast near 99, followed by 100 degrees tomorrow — tying the record high for both days. The Heat index is expected to climb well above 100 degrees. The extreme heat continues Friday and Saturday, with highs near 98 and heat index values again topping 100. There will be some relief Sunday, but not much, as the high is expected to drop to around 96 degrees.
Walker County commissioners are scheduled to vote tomorrow night on final approval of the county’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The Board of Commissioners meets at 6:30 Thursday evening at the Walker County Courthouse Annex IV. Commissioners will also consider adopting the county’s millage rate. Other major agenda items include a proposed $2.2 million courthouse remediation and roof repair contract, along with a nearly $70,000 SPLOST-funded purchase for the Walker County Jail. The public is invited to attend.
Representatives from WLA Studio will be in southeastern Walker County today and tomorrow conducting a historic resources survey. The survey area includes unincorporated parts of the county between State Route 151 and West Armuchee Road. Residents may see survey workers wearing safety vests, with vehicles displaying large “WLA Studio Survey Team” magnets. The survey is a necessary step toward helping Walker County regain eligibility for funding to restore and preserve local historic properties.
Walker County will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks with a Patriot Day service honoring the first responders who lost their lives. The public ceremony begins at 8:40 Friday morning, September 11th, in front of the Walker County Courthouse. Walker County Fire Rescue and the Sheriff’s Office will lead the service, with local first responders, students, and community leaders taking part. Congressman Clay Fuller, Sheriff Steve Wilson, and Fire Chief Blake Hodge are also scheduled to participate. The public is invited to attend.
The U.S. Postal Service is planning a temporary increase in prices for some package shipping services during the 2026 holiday season. USPS has filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission for the temporary rate adjustment, which is designed to help cover additional handling costs during the busy holiday shipping season. If approved, the higher rates would take effect October 4th and remain in place through January 17th of next year. The increases would apply to several package services, including Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage.
