The National Weather Service says Monday afternoon’s storm in Trion was a downburst — likely a wet microburst — and not a tornado. The Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency contacted the National Weather Service following the storm, which developed rapidly around 4:15 Monday afternoon. The storm reached about 40-thousand feet before collapsing within roughly 20 minutes. The N-W-S estimates the resulting straight-line winds may have reached 60 to 70 miles per hour. Officials say there was no rotation associated with the storm, and radar did not detect the strongest winds near the ground. That’s why no tornado warning was issued and sirens were not activated. E-911 received 17 calls reporting downed trees and power lines. Emergency Management has identified four homes with tree-related damage, with additional assessments underway.
A former Hays State Prison corrections officer is facing new federal drug and gun charges. Forty-one-year-old Mark Edward Jeffery was stationed at the Trion prison in 2018 when he was caught smuggling cellphones, chargers and methamphetamine into the facility. Jeffery pleaded guilty to federal meth trafficking in 2019 and served five years in prison. Now, prosecutors say a Gordon County deputy found Jeffery sleeping in a vehicle in February 2025, with meth, heroin, pills, two loaded handguns and drug-packaging materials. Jeffery appeared in federal court yesterday after being indicted on three federal charges. The charges remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent.
LaFayette Volleyball is now 5-0 in region play. The Ramblers scored win in two sets over both Sonoraville and Coahulla Creek last night. The Ramblers will travel to Darlington on Thursday. JV plays at 5 followed by the varsity at 6.
