The Walker County committee studying data center development is moving closer to recommending strict new regulations for future facilities.  The committee is proposing limits on generator testing, including restrictions on testing hours and a ban when air quality reaches code orange or higher.  Members also recommended noise limits of 50 decibels for ambient sound and 65 decibels for low-frequency noise.  The committee wants mandatory financial bonds to cover cleanup and site restoration if a data center closes.  The next meeting for the Data Center Committee is November 5th.  The committee will present it’s final proposals to the Walker County Planning Commission and the board of commissioners on December 4th.
A newly released report provides more details about the dangerous conditions firefighters faced during a deadly shed fire in Rossville earlier this month.  The October 20th fire claimed the life of 38-year-old Michael James Carney.  Walker County firefighters encountered multiple explosions inside the roughly 800-square-foot shed, including exploding aerosol cans. One explosion was powerful enough to lift the building’s roof.  Firefighters switched to defensive operations and later discovered Carney’s body.  Investigators determined the fire was accidental. Vapors from spray foam insulation ignited after contacting an unidentified heat source inside the poorly ventilated shed.  The fire was brought under control about 22 minutes after crews arrived.
