In the latest edition of the Walker County Sheriff’s Tip of the Month, drivers are reminded that weather can be unpredictable, with heavy rain, hail, and fog causing vision issues. To ensure safety, drivers in Georgia must activate their vehicle’s headlights and windshield wipers during inclement weather. Georgia law OCGA 40-8-20 requires headlights to be on 30 minutes after sunset until sunrise, and when visibility is reduced due to weather or lighting conditions. While hazard lights are not illegal, drivers must be aware that they cannot indicate turning lanes or changing lanes, which can create unsafe conditions and cause accidents. Activated hazard lights are best used when pulled over under emergency conditions and do not allow reckless driving, red lights, or unsafe speeds.
