Walker County issued 276 permits last year for new home construction in the unincorporated parts of the county. That number is down from 2023’s record total of 352. However, last year’s numbers still out perform every other year in the last 15. 48 of the new homes were built near LaFayette. 30 permits were issued in Rock Spring. The average size of a new home built in the county last year was 2,519 square feet. The average costs was $267,630. 150 new homes are currently under construction in the northern part of the county. Another development will bring 75 homes to LaFayette.

Thirteen felony arrests on Tuesday in Walker County. 49-year-old Thomas Jason Ball was booked on possession of meth and a parole violation. There were four others arrested on possession of meth charges. 26-year-old Jared Alle Ball, 27-Year-old Thomas Joseph Pennson, 23-year-old Megan Brianna Long, 44-year-old Goody Mae Goodman. Also arrested and booked on Tuesday, 35-year-old Ashley Dawn Hanson for possession of a schedule II. 48-year-old Randy Gene Colman was booked on possession of schedule 4 charge.

According to fire officials in Catoosa County one woman died yesterday morning in a house fire. The 911 call came in at 4am yesterday about a house fire on Garden Grove Lane. The woman’s husband and brother were both injured trying to save the woman. The brother of the victim had severe burns and is hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

Walker County Commission Chairwoman Angie Teems has designated February as Spay/Neuter Awareness Month in the county. The animal shelter has had an issue with overcrowding. 74% of the dogs and 93% of the cats taken in by the shelter last year were given up by their owners. Later this month the county will launch a new program to provide vouchers for spay/neuter services at a participating vetinarian office. The voucher will also include microchipping and rabies vaccination.

Chef Greg Paulson and his family won the grand prize on Family Feud. Paulson is the head of the culinary program at GNTC. Paulson along with his wife and step-children won a five day run on the TV show. The top prize is a vacation package to Barbados. They are received a $10,000 cash bonus plus the money won on each episode. The total winnings for the family was $92,000.
