Walker County’s defiant state senator Colton Moore is free from the Fulton County Jail. Moore was released hours after his arrest yesterday at the Georgia State Capitol by state troopers. The 31-year-old Trenton native was released on a $1,000 bond for a single misdemeanor charge of willful obstruction of law enforcement officers. The Northwest Georgia Republican had been barred from the house floor since March 14th, 2024 when he criticized late Speaker David Raulston in senate chambers. Moore’s comments drew the ire of current House Speaker Jon Burns. Burns banned Moore for his comments. Prior to Thursday’s confrontation at the Capitol, Moore posted to social media his intent to challenge the ban. Burns has said that if Moore apologized for his anti-Raulston outburst, he’d be allowed back to the floor. The two had communicated Wednesday and Burns’ ban for Moore was left intact.
In a video posted to social media platforms such as X, Moore is shown on camera making multiple attempts to get past security officers in advance of Governor Kemp’s State of the State address yesterday. Moore is seen repeatedly maintaining that he had a constitutional duty to represent his voters despite orders to “step away.” When Moore tried to push his way past security, the confrontation became more intense, with Moore thrown to the ground by security. Moore said he was being hindered from representing the 200,000 voters in the 53rd Senate District. Moore resisted for some two minutes until the police put him in handcuffs and led him away. It’s unknown when Moore has a scheduled court appearance in Atlanta for the misdemeanor count.
