Two candidates have qualified to seek the vacant Ward 1 City Council seat in LaFayette. Tom Langford and Glen Gunnells will square off in the March 18th election. The Ward 1 City Council seat came open when Councilman Beacher Garmany passed away. The deadline to register to vote is February 17th. Early voting starts on the 24th of the month and runs until March 14th. Saturday voting is available on March 1st and March 8th. The polls will be open on election day, March 18th, from 7am to 7pm.

One person died in a house fire yesterday in Summerville. The fire happened nearly Lyerly Street yesterday afternoon. Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control quickly after arriving on the scene. One person was found inside the home and was pronounced dead. The investigation into the fire continues. No further details have been available.

The Walker County Commission will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 6th. The meeting starts at 6pm and will be held at the Courthouse Annex III on South Main Street in LaFayette. On the agenda is some unfinished business. That includes the appointment of a county attorney. Resolutions are on the agenda to appoint members to several boards including the Planning Commission and the Animal Control Board.

The latest restaurant health inspection report shows a 96 for both Old South Restaurant in Rossville and Choo Choo Bar B Que in Chickamauga. The Best in LaFayette received a 100.

LaFayette boys and girls basketball teams are back in action and back at home tomorrow. The Lady Ramblers and Ramblers will face Northwest Whitfield inside the Dan Priest Arena Tuesday evening.
