A man has been sentenced after being caught, bringing in contraband to a local prison and lying about his military service. News 12 reports that Nicholas Grindle was caught smuggling drugs and contraband into the Hays Correctional Center where he was a jailer. Prosecutors say they found he had been taking bribes from inmates to bring in the meth and phones. Grindle was also caught lying about his military service during a sentencing hearing. He was deployed to Afghanistan, but officials confirmed that the story he told of being stabbed by a Taliban fighter who he killed with his pistol was all made up. In federal court, Grindle received a sentence of eight plus years in prison.

And so you’re aware, Ardurra representatives will be in the Villanow area this week working on a historic resources survey for Walker County. All staff working in the field will have the Ardurra logo on their high visibility vests. The survey area begins at the intersection of Hwy 136 and W. Armuchee Road and runs east to the Whitfield County Line, then south to the Gordon, Floyd and Chattooga County lines, then west to W. Armuchee Road, then north back to Hwy 136.

LaFayette Parks and Recreation made some changes in Soccer evaluations this week. One of those changes took place last night with another coming Thursday evening. Evaluations for kids 10 and under and 12 and under will be at the Lowell Green Gym on Webb Wheeler Road. 10 and under will be 5:30 tomorrow afternoon while 12 and under will follow at 6:30pm. Parks and Rec has announced the 4 and under will not have evaluations, as they will be split up into teams later this week and the information sent to the coaches. They are also in need of more coaches in several age groups. If you have an interest, call the Rec Department at 706-639-1590.

In 7-AAA Tournament action Tuesday night, the LaFayette girls lost to Heritage 61-44. The LaFayette boys will play in the 7-AAA tournament tonight. LaFayette wrestling is headed to the sectionals of the state wrestling tournament. The team is leaving for Gainesville on Friday at 5:30pm. The community is invited to come down to the square and send the team off. The wrestling starts at 9am on Saturday morning.
