Yesterday was the last day to register to vote in the city of LaFayette election. Election day is March 18th. Voters will select between Tom Langford and Glenn Gunnells to fill the Ward 1 City Council seat. Early voting begins next Monday and runs through March 14th.
Only one felony arrest in Walker County on Sunday. It happened Sunday night when police arrested 42-year-old Micah Zachary Medley. Medley was booked on Charges of possession of meth, drug related objects, no insurance and unregistered vehicle.
Gas prices have climbed in recent weeks. According to AAA northwest Georgia still has the best gas prices in the state. The average price of regular unleaded gas in Walker, Dade and Catoosa counties is $2.84. The price in Dalton is $2.91. The average price across the state is $3.00 per gallon. That’s still 17-cents less than the average price a year ago.
Georgia Centennial Farm application is now open. The deadline for applications is May 1st. Nominees must be working farms with a minimum of 10 acres of the original purchase, actively involved in agricultural production, and must generate at least $1,000 in annual farm-generated income. In addition, farms must have been continuously farmed by members of the same family for at least 100 years or be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Qualifying Georgia Centennial Farms are honored each October during an awards ceremony at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. If you get a text claiming you’re due a $1,400 stimulus check from the IRS, don’t click on any links. The text is most certainly a scam, as the federal agency doesn’t send such messages. Yet criminals are impersonating the IRS to trick taxpayers into sharing personal information by texting them fake alerts of their eligibility for extra money. This warning comes from the Better Business Bureau.
A quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Wall will be on display at the Rossville Community Center (301 Williams Street) this Friday and Saturday. The drop-in event is free for everyone to experience between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The replica was built by 200 inmates at the Walker State Prison using 3,000 pounds of cardboard and 30 gallons of glue and paint. They invested 9,000 hours to add all 58,300 names by hand, one letter at a time. The event is sponsored by Operation Outreach and the Walker County Historic Preservation Commission.
