Try to avoid burning anything today if you can. We’ll have low humidity and it’s extremely dry. Conditions are favorable for wildfires to spread quickly. The National Weather Service says Walker, Dade, Catoosa and Chattooga Counites have high fire danger conditions for today and tonight. There have been several fires in the area over the last week. Last week the Walker County Fire Department assisted several agencies in a fire near Summerville. The blaze started with the homeowner having a fire in the yard. It spread to more than 55-acres in the Mars Hills area.

The National Integrated Drought Information System says the northern tip of Walker County is in a moderate drought. The rest of the county is listed as being abnormally dry. The good news is that the NIDIS says the drought conditions should improve over the course of the month.

One felony arrest in Walker County on Saturday. 49-year-old Daniel Keith Bradley was booked on 27 charges of aggravated animal cruelty and four counts of cruelty to animals. The complete arrest report is on our website at DiscoverWalker.com.

The Walker County Board of Commissioners will meet on Thursday of this week. The meeting starts at 6pm at the Courthouse Annex III in LaFayette. On the agenda is a resolution to approve the list of roads for resurfacing for 2025-26. There is also a resolution to appoint a member to the alcoholic beverage commission. The Walker County Sheriff’s Office announced last week the passing of retired Deputy Sheriff W. Keith Smith. Smith passed on February 26th. Smith began his law enforcement career in 1972 with the LaFayette Police Department. In 1974 he joined the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Serving under four different sheriffs, Smith rose to the rank of Captain before retiring.

LaFayette High School baseball starts region play this week. The Ramblers are back on the field tomorrow. LaFayette faces Northwest Whitfield at Chris Jones Field. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.
