Catoosa County School Board members were met with concern from parents over what they called ‘inappropriate books in schools’ at yesterday’s board meeting. The issue stems from a bill passed in 2022, which requires public schools to respond to concerns about material parents consider to be obscene. Some parents claimed the Superintendent made a promise in 2023 to remove inappropriate materials from public schools. However, they say inappropriate books still appeared in Catoosa County classrooms between August of 2023 and February of 2024. They cited books like “The Fault In Our Stars,” “The Hate You Give,” and “Paper Towns.”
The Georgia legislative session for 2025 is complete. Georgians may soon receive a tax credit for their children. House Bill 136 is headed to the governor’s desk after it passed the general assembly. The bill gives residents with a child under the age of 5 a $250 tax credit. If signed into law, it will go into effect for the 2026 tax year, Lawmakers also passed the only bill they are constitutionally required to: the budget. The 2026 fiscal year budget totals 37.7 billion dollars. It allocates money across the state. For example, $15 million will to Georgia school districts with a high number of children in poverty. It also includes millions for hurricane Helene relief. 200 million dollars will be spent by the Georgia Department of Corrections to enhance safety and staffing within Georgia’s prison system. Another bill that passed, Senate Bill 185, bans the state from paying for gender affirming care for prisoners.
