Walker County Animal Control is temporarily closed for part of today as the department moves into a new office space. The offices closed yesterday for the move. They are expected to reopen today at noon and resume regular services.
The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will temporarily close a portion of Glenn-Viniard Road beginning today to accommodate construction work at the Battlefield. The closure will affect Glenn-Viniard Road between LaFayette Road and Wilder Road. During the construction period, all public traffic will be prohibited on the affected section of the roadway. Park officials expect the project to be completed by early September. A temporary detour will be established to maintain visitor access to designated battlefield tour routes while the work is underway. The park said the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve visitor safety and enhance the overall visitor experience within Chickamauga Battlefield. Visitors are encouraged to follow posted detour signs and allow additional travel time while the road closure is in effect.
The Walker County Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity, and adoption fees are currently being waived as officials ask the community to help find homes for dogs and cats. The waived fees are being offered through a partnership with the ASPCA. The shelter is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment required.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is making it easier to buy surplus property, launching its first-ever online real estate auctions. Georgia DOT currently has about 200 parcels available, ranging from small remnant tracts to properties as large as 17 acres. The first three online auctions opened August first, with about 100 additional parcels expected to be offered in the future. Interested buyers can review property information, research terms and submit bids online. A free account is required through Georgia DOT’s surplus property system.
