Just a reminder that all city offices in LaFayette are closed today in observance of the Good Friday holiday. Offices will reopen at regular times on Monday.

On Thursday, a superior court judge rejected the claim that two Walker County School Board members violated state nepotism laws…so says the complainant’s attorney. Back in January, the two Walker County school board members denied wrongdoing in the nepotism accusations against them. In December, Walker County resident Chelsea Cagle claimed Karen Harden and Mike Carruth could not serve in their positions because their sons work in government offices. At the time, Harden and Carruth both stated that their sons work for the government, but at the same time added that removing them from office would violate their constitutional rights. The defendants called the claims against them frivolous.

The Walker County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing concerning a number of zoning requests at their meeting last night. A list of those is on the Walker County Government Facebook page. There was also a lively discussion concerning Walker County’s fiscal responsibility toward the Walker County Development Authority and whether commissioners can levy a tax on citizens to fund it. Some language in the current document was in question. The full video from last night’s meeting is available on the County’s Facebook page. The Commission’s next meeting will be April 11at 6:30pm.

On Thursday, the City of LaFayette held a dedication ceremony for the recently completed restrooms at Queen City Lake. The project was a collaboration between the City of LaFayette and Walmart La Fayette employees. The Walmart Volunteerism Always Pays program matches funds for every hour that a Walmart Employee volunteers towards a community project, and contributed $8,000 towards the $16,000 project. A good portion of the facility was built by Walmart volunteers–with City Employees handling the electric, septic and the roof of the facility.
