The Walker County community is mourning the loss of Sergeant Anthony Augustus Gilleland Jr. of Trion, Georgia. Gilleland passed away Monday at the age of 59. A longtime sergeant with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, he was known for his dedication to law enforcement, his Christian faith, and his love for family and Alabama football. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carrie Gilleland, along with five children, grandchildren, and extended family members. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Coffman Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m.
A Walker County couple is facing multiple felony charges following a child trafficking and sex crimes investigation. Authorities say 60-year-old David Rutherford and 43-year-old Heather Rutherford, both of Flintstone, Georgia, were charged with trafficking, rape, and aggravated sodomy after investigators uncovered what they describe as ongoing abuse involving a child. The investigation began May 15 after deputies received a tip. A search warrant was later executed at the couple’s home on Nancy Lane. Officials say the pair had already been taken into custody in Rhea County, Tennessee. The case involved cooperation between sheriff’s offices in Walker, Hamilton, and Rhea counties.
The Walker County Animal Shelter is asking the community for help as supplies run low heading into the summer season. Shelter officials say they are in urgent need of lightweight linens, especially sheets and towels, to help keep dogs comfortable during the warmer weather. Staff say heavy blankets are not ideal for summer temperatures, and lighter bedding is needed for the animals in their care. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter gate at any time. Officials thank the community for its continued support of the shelter and its animals.
Downtown LaFayette is preparing for the annual Honeybee Festival, taking place this weekend, The free, rain-or-shine event features live music on multiple stages, including nationally recognized headline performers, along with dozens of food vendors and hundreds of arts and crafts booths. Families can also enjoy a free Kids Zone, hands-on exhibits at the Honeybee Education Pavilion, a KCBS barbecue competition, car show, pageants, and the popular Honey Show. The celebration kicks off Friday night with Honeybee Eve, featuring live music, food, and a community cornhole tournament.
