Walker County’s job market remains strong, with the latest labor report showing the county’s unemployment rate at 3.0 percent.  That’s below both the national rate of 4.1 percent and Georgia’s statewide rate of 3.3 percent.  Several nearby counties also reported low unemployment, including Catoosa and Gordon counties at 2.8 percent, and Dade County at 2.9 percent.  Officials say the numbers reflect continued stability in the regional workforce, although many employers are still facing challenges finding qualified workers.  Economic development efforts and industry expansion continue to create new job opportunities across Northwest Georgia.
The City of Lafayette has officially opened its newest recreation destination.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday for Traverse Park, located along Culberson Avenue.  The park features climbing walls, an accessible playground, a pavilion, skate park, walking trail, and disc golf course.  Officials say the park has quickly become a popular gathering place for families and visitors.  The climbing area was inspired by nearby Rocktown, a world-renowned bouldering destination, and is designed to introduce more people to outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.  Traverse Park is open daily from sunrise until 11 p.m., with lighting available for evening visitors.

Applicants will not need a code to waive the fee.  The admissions deadline for the fall semester is Aug. 4. Classes are scheduled to begin on Aug. 17.
The City of Summerville is receiving nearly $188,000 in grant funding to support construction of a new soccer mini-pitch at the Fairgrounds property near Fairway Recreation.  The project was made possible through the GA 100 Initiative, with support from the Atlanta United Foundation and Atrium Health Floyd-Polk Foundation.  The 60-by-120-foot soccer mini-pitch will expand recreational opportunities for local youth and families.  Additional funding will support restroom facilities and electrical upgrades, with future plans calling for a full-size soccer field and expanded parking at the site.
Georgia DOT is easing the way for Independence Day travelers.  Construction-related lane closures on Georgia interstates will be suspended from 6 a.m. Next Friday, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 6th, when possible.  Officials say Northwest Georgia drivers should see light traffic on I-24 near Chattanooga and I-75 near the Tennessee line, though heavier congestion is expected around Atlanta.  Motorists are reminded to drive safely, watch for roadside crews, follow the Move Over Law, and check travel conditions through 511 Georgia before hitting the road.
