          The Walker County Board of Commissioners is reviewing a proposed 40-million-dollar budget for the 2027 fiscal year.  County CFO Christian Roach presented the plan during a special called meeting last week, saying county leaders reduced initial department requests by more than 10 million dollars.  The proposed budget includes a 7-point-9 percent increase in expenses and would require an additional 2-point-8 million dollars in revenue to balance.  Public hearings on the budget are scheduled for July 9th and August 6th at 6:30 p.m. during commission meetings. Residents can review the proposal at walkercountyga.gov.
          The City of Ringgold is mourning the loss of longtime city councilman Jake Haynes, who died suddenly.  Haynes, a lifelong Ringgold resident, served on the city council for more than 12 years. City officials say he was known for his love of the community, generosity, and commitment to putting others first.  Catoosa County officials also expressed condolences, highlighting Haynes’ work with local schools and the community.  Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Haynes’ council term was scheduled to continue through the end of 2027. Officials have not announced plans for filling the vacant seat.
          Georgia Northwestern Technical College is giving prospective students a chance to apply for the fall semester without paying an application fee.  G-N-T-C’s Free Application Week is this week. The college is waving its 25-dollar application fee, and students will not need a special code.  The fall semester application deadline is August 4th, with classes beginning August 17th.
          Visitors can celebrate Independence Day weekend with free programs and historic events at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.  The park will offer living history demonstrations, ranger programs, and tours July 3rd through the 5th, highlighting the 1863 Battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga.  Entrance fees to Point Park on Lookout Mountain will be waived during the holiday weekend.  Events include battlefield tours, ranger talks, and artillery and infantry demonstrations at Chickamauga Battlefield and Point Park. Visitors are encouraged to experience the history preserved at the national park.
