Walker County students will head back to the classroom on Wednesday, Aug. 5th. The first major break in the school calendar will be Fall Break, scheduled for Oct. 12 through Oct. 16. Students and staff will also enjoy Holiday Break beginning Dec. 21, with classes resuming Jan. 5. Walker County Schools is implementing new rules for student cell phones and other personal electronic devices as required by Georgia’s Distraction-Free Education Act. Students who bring devices to school must keep them powered off and stored in a backpack, purse or shoulder bag from the start of the school day until dismissal. School officials say the policy is designed to reduce distractions and improve learning. The district also reminds families it’s not responsible for devices that are lost, stolen or damaged.
The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Office is reminding homeowners they do not need to reapply each year for homestead or senior property tax exemptions if they’ve already been approved and still qualify. A new application is typically only needed after a change in property ownership. Officials also say residents who have recently turned 62, 65, 70, or 75 may qualify for additional age-based exemptions and should contact the Tax Commissioner’s Office for more information.
Georgia Power has announced a new Customer Protection Pledge as Georgia’s population and economy continue to grow. The utility says large energy users, including data centers, will pay the full cost of new infrastructure, helping keep residential electric rates stable through at least 2028. Georgia Power also pledged to invest in grid reliability, negotiate fairly with property owners, maintain a balanced mix of energy sources, and continue supporting environmental stewardship and workforce development as the state expands.
