A Walker County fugitive is behind bars after leading authorities on a cross-state chase Tuesday. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says detectives tried to arrest Kennie Montieth on outstanding felony warrants from Walker County, but he fled in a vehicle, leading deputies down Rossville Boulevard and onto Interstate 24. The pursuit crossed into Georgia, where deputies used a PIT maneuver to safely stop the vehicle. Montieth was then taken into custody by Georgia authorities. In addition to the Walker County felony warrants, Montieth now faces new charges in both Tennessee and Georgia, including aggravated assault, felony obstruction, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and several traffic violations. Authorities have not released details about the Walker County warrants.
Georgia officials are asking residents to help fight human trafficking by downloading the free “See Something, Send Something” mobile app. First Lady Marty Kemp and GBI Director Chris Hosey say the app allows people to anonymously report suspicious activity, submit photos and send tips directly to law enforcement. Officials say Georgia remains a major target for human trafficking because of its international airport and extensive highway system. In March, authorities arrested 24 people during a human trafficking operation in Houston County. The “See Something, Send Something” app is available for Apple and Android devices. Anonymous tips can also be reported to the GBI by calling 1-800-597-TIPS.

Walker County families can get ready for the new school year during the annual Walker County Kids’ Day next week. The free event is set for next Thursday from 1 until 5 p.m. at Saddle Ridge Elementary School in Rock Spring. Families can receive free school supplies, backpacks, immunizations, vision, hearing and dental screenings, along with information from community organizations. Organizers say all supplies will be distributed while they last. Walker County Kids’ Day is sponsored by Walker County Family Connection, the Walker School Foundation and Primary Healthcare Centers.
