The Walker County Board of Commissioners will hold a special called work session Thursday morning to continue discussions on the county’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The meeting is set for 8:30 Thursday morning in the conference room of the Walker County Administration Building, or Courthouse Annex One, at 101 South Duke Street in LaFayette. The meeting is open to the public. The commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting is set for August sixth at 6:30 p.m.
Walker County Schools is sharing its plans for using supplemental federal education funds during the upcoming school year. The district’s July 2026 Forum is now available on the Walker County Schools Facebook page. The recorded presentation outlines plans for using supplemental Title and IDEA funds during the 2026-2027 school year. Parents, educators and community members are encouraged to watch the forum, with an opportunity to provide feedback available at the end of the recording.
The Museum of LaFayette is seeking local residents who can help document Cherokee history in and around the community. The museum’s next exhibit will focus on the Cherokee people, including a section on Fort Cumming and local connections to Cherokee heritage. Organizers are asking anyone with verified Cherokee lineage or oral Cherokee history passed down through their families to share those stories. The Museum of LaFayette held a soft opening May 30th, with a grand opening planned for this fall.
