Walker County is moving forward with plans to sell surplus government-owned property. County officials say they’ve identified 25 parcels with no specific public use. The first property, a vacant four-tenths of an acre lot on McFarland Avenue in Rossville, is now up for sealed bids through August fourteenth. The county says selling unused land returns it to the tax rolls, reduces maintenance costs, and creates new economic opportunities. The minimum bid is just under forty-five thousand dollars.
Walker County voters in the Rock Spring Precinct will head to a new polling place beginning September first. The Board of Elections has approved moving the precinct from Georgia Northwestern Technical College to the gymnasium at Center Grove Baptist Church on Center Grove Church Road in Rock Spring. Officials say changes at the G-N-T-C campus made the previous voting location unsuitable. The change takes effect September first, and voters with questions can contact the Walker County Board of Elections.
The Walker County Board of Elections is reminding voters about a major change to School Board elections. Beginning with the November third General and Special Election, School Board members will be elected by district instead of countywide. That means voters will only cast ballots for the School Board district where they live. The November ballot includes Districts Two and Three, plus a special election for the unexpired District Four seat. New voter precinct cards showing School Board districts will be mailed to all registered voters by mid-August.

Walker County commissioners are considering several options to pay for nine new firefighter positions, including a possible property tax increase. During a special meeting Thursday, officials said adding the firefighters would ensure every fire truck responds with a three-person crew. One proposal would raise property taxes by about nine percent in unincorporated areas and eleven percent inside cities. Other ideas include increasing the county’s fire safety fee or using reserve funds. No decision has been made. The issue returns to the County Commission at its August sixth meeting.
