Queen City Lake Beach in LaFayette will remain closed because of elevated E. coli levels. The city says daily testing continues, but results so far have been inconclusive. Officials are expanding testing to try to pinpoint the source. The city is also working with Georgia D-N-R regarding a non-native duck population that could be contributing to the problem. Residents have also raised concerns about a nearby private sewer leak. The city says repairs are underway. Officials say they’re continuing to collect data and are not jumping to conclusions as the investigation continues.
The Walker County Animal Shelter is partnering with the A-S-P-C-A for the second year as part of the national “Rescue Effect” campaign. Adoption fees are being waived on all animals through the end of the month. The shelter says adopting or fostering one animal helps create space and resources to care for others in need. Available pets can be viewed online, or visit the shelter Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Officials encourage residents to adopt and help spread the word.
Walker County Schools are back in session this week. The kids are back in class starting on Wednesday. That means the busses will be rolling this week and maybe some new drivers on the road as well. Remember to slow it down in school zones and watch for school busses.

The Walker County Board of Commissioners will meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Courthouse Annex Three in LaFayette. The agenda includes a public hearing on the proposed 2027 county budget, followed by votes on adoption. Commissioners will also consider extending the county’s temporary data center moratorium from 90 to 180 days and creating a Data Center Study Group. Several planning and zoning requests are also scheduled. The meeting is open to the public.
